Jaz’s recent Beatminerz compilation reminded me not only of how great their version of DJ Krush’s ‘Meiso’ is but also of the astounding quality of two other bangin’ versions by the man himself and DJ Shadow. All three have bounced around the cavities located on each side of my head for years now, but I’ll be damned if I’ve ever managed to decide on a definite favourite. Whereas the dark, brooding aesthetic of the original always instigates a relatively violent nodding of the head, the drop into the chorus on Shadow’s version is absolutely devastating… but what about the filtered groove on Da Beatminerz’s cut? Goddammit!
There are several other remixes of this track in existence, so if you think I’m missing a trick then tell me, otherwise state your preference and help cease the whirring in my head. Please.

this is that shit, i got this on cd&lp. these remixes are fresh. krush got that off.

Yeah man, I got the album, 12"s and CD single on a promo (I think Mo Wax just sent us everything for the hell of it) when I was working at the College magazine as music editor. The Krush one is my favourite though, even though I'm a Shadow fanboy (up until the most recent album, anyway). SICKNESS. But Black Thought + Malik B murder that track, no doubt. The 4-Hero versions were OK, but the timestretching doesn't sound right nowadays.

Yea, I agree, I don’t think the 4Hero versions work particularly well. Something different, but nothing in comparison to the other three versions here.

Thanks for posting this - nice cut, great remixes. Anyone know where the beautiful keys on the chorus come from in the Shadow remix? I’ve been trying to find that out since 96! Still my favorite Shadow joint

Shadow's just edges out the original in my book, but Da Beatminerz did a good job. You can't relly go wrong with Black Thought on a banging beat though, right?
