So I just came across the latest bit of Pete Rock production at 2 Dope Boyz via the PR Forum. Having recently voiced my concerns over the Chocolate Boy Wonder’s current direction, this nonsense only serves to take another swipe at the already withered shreds of my optimism when it comes to contemporary Soul Brother material.
Pete, I’m still there for you, but there’s only so much one man can take.

sounds common, pedestrian, uninspired. but even geniuses need to escape their brilliance and return to earth for a break with the rest of us sometimes. it gets lonely up there in the clouds, i am sure…i am sure it's only temporary. don't worry.

Ugh. That is horrible. Perhaps its been put out as Marco Polo has used the same sample for Large Pro's forthcoming album and he doesn't want a repeat of the Jazz (We Got) situation?
Whatever, it's still doo-doo compared to PR's previous output. Even some of the stuff on NYs Finest sounded better than this. And most of that . . .
well. Y'know.

For me the vast majority of beats on NY’s Finest were significantly better than this and still basically sounded like Pete Rock.
What bugs me about this sort of thing is that it makes me feel like I’m doing Pete a disservice: why should my opinion influence his artistic direction? However, on the flip side to that, stuff like this is so far from his established aesthetic that it just makes no sense to me why he would be churning out material of this nature.
Premo is an example of a golden age producer doing things right in the contemporary game. Sure he’s moved his sound on, got more commercial when he needed to, but for the most part it still sounds like Premier and it’s still dope. PR needs to take a leaf outta his book if he’s so intent on ditching the drums and horns formula that made his name in the first place.

I get what you're saying there Dan, but, like Preme, PR had a style of his own back in the 90's that many tried to mimic but couldn't get that blend that he so effortlessly (seemingly) achieved.
I'm all for artistic developement (I'm one of the few who liked The Love Movement, for example), but I don't feel Petes doing himself any justice with beats this un-inspiring.
I'm losing my train of thought here and the bus beckons, but I think PR has slipped down my ladder of influential producers ever since NY Finest. I enjoyed some of it, don't get me wrong, but to compare it to other recent work (eg. The UN) is possibly doing ourselves a disservice in trying to keep the man himself in such high esteem.

This exorcist sample has been done and you can do a better job with it i could make a better beat and have off my copy of the soundtrack but i think the bassline during the chorus is type ill…could have done wthout the generally boring music during charles verses hes an out-there mc and matbbe pete killed everything to highlight the verse,,, i thnk thats wishful thinking though… “the Exorcist loop? c’mon dude, theres so many different ways to flip that…i dont think think horns would have fit here step ya game up pete. I just copped an old vanilla fudge 45 and got it hope…dropped the needle and sit popped in the sample for “kids thats richs” ill!!!!! been getting a lot of pr on accident.
